How to Recognize Repetitive Strain Injury

Publicado em 3 de out de 2016
Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI is also commonly called Repetitive Stress Injury, and it affects millions of people. It’s usually thought of as a work-related injury because it occurs in people performing repetitive motions. But it can also occur outside the workplace, as in a repetitive activity performed with a hobby like gardening. And the repetitive activity doesn’t have to involve a lot of movement, either. RSI often affects those who sit at a desk (especially a computer) every day for hours on end. Also, standing in a production line hour after hour is also a very common way to develop an RSI.

Symptoms of Repetitive Strain Injury usually begin with recurring pain and/or soreness. It can happen in your neck, upper back, shoulders, wrists, or hands. You may also experience tingling, numbness, coldness, or loss of sensation in the affected areas. A general checklist of symptoms includes:

• Tenderness or pain in your muscles or joints
• Throbbing sensation in the affected area
• Tingling (pins & needles) or numbness in your hand or arm
• Loss of strength or sensation in your hand

These symptoms initially occur when you are carrying out the repetitive motion, for example during working hours. Towards the end of the day your symptoms may improve when you finish working and are at rest. This initial stage of symptoms may last for several weeks.

If they go untreated, the symptoms are likely to persist, causing pain or aching much of the time. You may also have tender swelling in the affected area, which can last for several months. Pain could also be experienced all the time, affecting your sleep.
At this stage the condition may be more difficult to treat.

Recognizing the early symptoms of Repetitive Strain Injury is important to ensure that a treatment is effective. If not, your joints can easily stiffen and may even cause you to lose your job.
